Masters of Horror Season One Limited Edition Mausoleum Set

This Limited Edition Mausoleum DVD Set looks amazing. Too bad I only really enjoyed about half these films and the ones I really liked (Incident On and Off a Mountain Road, Dreams in the Witch House, and Cigarette Burns) can be bought very cheaply used.

Although, according to TV Shows on DVD,
The "14th Disc" - available exclusively with the Box Set – contains such never-before-seen footage as:
- Masters of Horror Dinner – Mick Garris assembles the Season One directors for a special MOH dinner at Hollywood's legendary Magic Castle;
- Masters of Horror DGA Panel discussion
- Fantasy Film Festival: Mick Garris Interviews Steven Spielberg
- Fantasy Film Festival: Mick Garris Interviews John Boorman

I'm watching Jenifer now and I just picked up Fair Haired Child, so maybe they will sway me toward the box set.

Jekyll is a crazy ride!

I caught the first two episodes of BBC ONE's new postmodern take on Robert Louis Stevenson's novel The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Jekyll online yesterday and I have to say that I was highly impressed.

Set in modern London, Jekyll is not a adaptation of the novel, but a strange continuation, tying the new Dr. Jekyll to Stephenson's cursed scientist.

James Nesbitt plays both Jekyll and Hyde, switching back and forth with little make-up. Nesbitt relies on facial expression, body movements, voice, and a brilliant grasp on the primal attitude of the character.

Jekyll juggles a complex plot and personal relationships well, taking the time to show the horror that a man with the power and the lack of control to be a monster can do at the same time we root for him against the people that want to control and support his curse.

I'll be watching the whole six episode miniseries and if you can find it online (try a torrent site), you should check it out as well.

I need some Stuff

EegahInc over at The B-Movie Catechism corrects me without knowing it.

I was discussing Larry Cohen 1985 movie, The Stuff a few nights ago and I described the origin of the killer yogurt as the moon. After reading EegahInc's review I see that The Stuff comes from a quarry (much like the creature that scared a 9 year old boy to crying and scarred him for life from jello creatures, Son of the Blob).

I moved The Stuff up on my netflix quarry, so expect a review in the near future.

Movie Review - Lady Snowblood: Love Song of Vengeance

After loving Toshiya Fujita's 1973 revenge film, Lady Snowblood, (trailer) I couldn't wait to see the sequel.

In Lady Snowblood: Love Song of Vengeance (1974) the title character, played by the lovely and amazing Meiko Kaji (if there was ever a reason to watch these movies beyond swords, samurai, and revenge it is her performances) doesn't have the personal grudge she had in the first film.

She has now become more akin to a spirit of vengeance traveling the countryside killing every villain who crosses her path. After she is captured and used by the secret police to infiltrate a rebel group she turns the tables on the evil establishment.

Though the story is grounded in a factual historic setting, the storyline is less engaging than the first film and Lady Snowblood is little more than a tool for the real protagonists and antagonists of a film that would have been better standing alone without the assassin's involvement.

That said, everyone should pick up Lady Snowblood. After you fall in love with the first, you will want to take the time to check out the sequel.

Bid on dinner with Joss Whedon

Joss Whedon is auctioning off a dinner with himself for the charity Equality Now.

According to Serenity Stuff, winning bidders get to be a part of
"an exclusive get together at the San Diego Comic Con this July. The five highest bidders get a private sit down with Joss, chewing the fat and drinking the drinks. There are some other rarities up for auction as part of the fundraiser, but the main event takes place in a private room in San Diego’s trendy gaslamp neighborhood in late July. The auction will run from July 2 to July 12."
Check out the auction site HERE.

ASMODEE Games has announced the first expansion to one of No Blasters' favorite party games, Werewolves of Miller's Hollow.

New Moon adds new characters, new rules, and "event cards, which, on each turn, will change the way the game is played."

If you are looking for a party game that can involve over ten people and provide hours of imaginative fun, Werewolves of Miller's Hollow is the game for you.

Burn Notice - Bruce Campbell Interview

Moviesonline has an interview with No Blasters' favorite, Bruce Campbell. It looks like he'll have a supporting role in the Summer USA series, Burn Notice.

I'd seen the print ads floating around that made the show look like Mr. and Mrs. Smith, but now I will have to check it out.

Tuesday Tube - Undercover with the Fratelli Gang

This mash-up has been out for a while, but I couldn't stop laughing when I came across it the other day. Jack has never met a more conniving and evil adversary. Chunk knows how to avoid any interrogation!

I also caught this hilarious 24 mash-up with Auqua Teen.

Neil Gaiman interview at Aint it Cool News

Quint over at Aint it Cool News has a nice long interview with the wonderful Neil Gaiman. They discuss everything movie wise from STARDUST, BEOWULF, CAROLINE, and the long stalled SANDMAN film, to how Gaiman want to direct DEATH himself.

It's just amazing that Gaiman is finally getting his due. I just passed on the love myself by giving one of my Early American Lit. professors (who studies the Uncle Remus Tales) a copy of ANANSI BOYS.

Here is a shakey trailer for Dario Argento's last in his mother trilogy that started with the strange and wonderful Suspiria (which I got the chance to see again a few nights ago).

All Good Things End on Their Own Terms (Battlestar Galactica Ends in 4th Season)

It will be sad to see Battlestar go the 4th season, which starts in January 2008, but I am glad that it will have a definite end that the producers and writers can shape instead of jumping the Scar!

According to Sci Fi Wire, Executive producers Ronald Moore and David Eick said,
Over the course of the last year, the story and the characters have been moving strongly toward that end, and we've decided to listen to those internal voices and conclude the show on our own terms. And while we know our fans will be saddened to know the end is coming, they should brace themselves for a wild ride getting there: We're going out with a bang.

I say everybody dies!
