Tuesday Tube - The Cat Came Back

55 Bells had a link to this classic animation that I remember seeing when I was younger.

The Cat Came Back was directed by Cordell Barker for the National Film Board of Canada in 1988.

Book Review - Hidden Talents

I received David Lubar's young adult novel Hidden Talents as a gift and my first impression was a little doubtful. However, from the first line, Lubar's quirky first person narrative grabbed me and wouldn't let go.

The novel revolves around a troubled 13-year-old boy named Martin (the narrator), who, after getting kicked out of every other school, ends up at Edgeview. Now, Edgeview is one of those places where they send troubled boys to rot - a place right above juvie hall, but Martin quickly finds things that he likes about the place. The biggest thing is his group of friends who he discovers have superpowers (creating fire, reading minds, telekinesis, and so on). These friends are rejects like him, so when the school is threatened with a shut down, they band together to stop it.

I have been a superhero comic fan for years, but I had never read a novel that handled superpowers as well as I would have liked them to (if you have some recommendations, pass them my way).

Hidden Talents on the other hand, handles the powers well, by keeping them understated. There are no huge super battles or looming world shattering destinies here, just some boys using what they have to keep their school open. Lubar does a wonderful job of keeping the story low key, and you feel like a member of the gang as Martin tells you of their exploits.

The one problem I had with the work is that it seemed like Martin moved toward his theory of super powers too quickly. Though I wanted more insight into the process of his discovery, the work as a whole moved on well and kept me interested even after my disbelief at Martin's initial claims.

I recommend this book to people of all ages, and right now Amazon has it for 3 bucks. I just bought my nephew one for his birthday. The sequel, TrueTalents is also out now in hard cover, though I have yet had a chance to read it.

My Name is Bruce - Bruce Campbell Interview

Though I am sure I will never get to see My Name is Bruce in the theater, I can't wait for the DVD of what sounds like an exciting romp through the mind of a brilliant and hilarious man who really could save the world if we needed him to.

Hmmm, Bruce Campbell for President in 08' - I like it!

Oh, here's an small interview from the Corvallis Gazette-Times.

No Surfing - TV News (Veronica Mars, Heroes, Bionic Woman)

Televisionary gives us the sad and maddening news that Veronica Mars is over. Come on CW - You suck!

SCI FI reports that NBC will have six segments of a new series called Heroes: Origins to fill the slot when Heroes Season 2 goes on hiatus. Scifi channel should take a hint and bring us Caprica in the same way.

SCI FI also has news that Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica) will play the original cyborg in NBC's Bionic Woman SF series

Virgin Comics gives a glimpse into Guy Ritchie's Gamekeeper

Guy Ritchie's Gamekeeper may be Virgin Comic's attempt to milk a well known name, but it has one thing going for it that immediately got my attention.

Gamekeeper is written by none other than Andy Diggle, the Vertigo writer behind the amazing Losers series.

If this preview is indication, Diggle is going to make this series one to pick up.

Serenity Collector's Edition Cover Art!

The cover art for the Serenity Collector's Edition looks amazing. It has the gritty, stark, Western/Sci-fi look of the movie that the first cover and posters (though I loved them) never captured.

And Mal is gracing the cover! That is always a good thing!

The Special Edition will have:

- Deleted Scenes with Commentary by Joss Whedon
- Extended Scenes
- Outtakes
- Take A Walk On Serenity
- The Green Clan
- Joss Whedon Intro
- We’ll Have A Fruity Oaty Good Time!
- Feature Commentary with Joss Whedon, Nathan Fillion, Adam Baldwin, Summer Glau and Ron Glass
- Feature Commentary with Joss Whedon
- A Filmmaker’s Journey
- Future History: The Story Of Earth That Was
- Re-lighting The Firefly
- What’s In A Firefly?

Supernatural Origins - Preview

The CW has a five page preview to the upcoming prequel comic to Supernatural called Origins. It's being put out by Wildstorm and its written by comic guru Geoff Johns with artist Phil Hester (Green Arrow).

On the edge of Resident Evil: Extinction

Yes, I am posting like crazy this morning. It's because I don't want to get out of bed and continue writing the final paper of my grad-school career.

I thought I was done and then I spotted this beauty over at Shocktillyoudrop.com

I have marked September 21st as the end of the world as we know it.

More on The Monster Squad

Fangoria is reporting that the 20th Anniversary release of The Monster Squad will be loaded with extras including:

• Audio commentary by Dekker and actors Andre Gower, Ryan Lambert and Ashley Bank
• Audio commentary by Dekker and director of photography Bradford May
Monster Squad Forever!—a five-part retrospective featuring new interviews with Dekker, actors Gower, Lambert, Bank, Duncan Regehr, Tom Noonan and more!
A Conversation with Frankenstein—a never-before-seen classic interview with the Monster himself (Tom Noonan in makeup)
• Deleted scenes
• Original theatrical trailer
• TV spot
• Still gallery

I love the cover, but I hate that the Gill-Creature is pushed off to the side so much that you can't even see him. Give the Gill the credit her deserves! So what if he did little more than stand there and look like he was struggling to breath.

Right now, you can pre-order The Monster Squad from Amazon for $13.99

In the Name of the King Trailer

In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale is another video game movie made by the unstoppable (please-stop him) Uwe Boll.

Boll has made such monstrosities as House of the Dead, Alone in the Dark, and Blood Rayne, yet I keep coming back for more.

In the Name of the King has an impressive cast, including one of my favorite Sliders alums, John Rhys-Davies, and Hellboy himself, Ron Perlman.

That has to make it worth something, right? Ben Kingsley just needed the money when he was in Blood Rayne.

Of course, I do want to see Blood Rayne II: Deliverance since I found out that it takes place in the old West !

It's like he reads my mind and then churns them out. Maybe I will be wrong about his new movies.

EW's Top 25 Sci Fi movies and TV

Entertainment Weekly has a smartly focused list of Sci Fi film and television over at their site, and though I don't agree with their order, I sign off on most of their inclusions.

We all know that Firefly should be higher, classic movies like The Day the Earth Stood Still should have their place, and their reasoning for The Matrix's's placement was more about film making than Sci Fi story.

But, their recognition of greats like John Carpenter's The Thing and V: The Miniseries made me smile with glee.

Iron Man's Red and Gold Armor

Entertainment Weekly
has provided a picture of Jon Favreau's Iron Man in his full armor. I have to say, the pic gets me more excited for the movie than I was before. It looks pretty good. Of course, we'll have to see it in action before we can make a real decision.

In the meantime, if you want to read the real origin of Iron Man, you should check out Orson Scott Card's take in Ultimate Iron Man.
