Wes Craven to scare up new horrors

I have to say that I am torn over the announcement of Wes Craven's deal with Rogue Pictures to write and direct new horror movies.

The deal to produce has been made with Rogue Pictures, an offshoot of which is his newly formed Midnight Pictures. Though Midnight Pictures won’t be putting its name to this initial self-penned and directed pic, it will be behind remakes of his titles, beginning with Last House on the Left, and to include Shocker and The People Under the Stairs.

On one hand, I was impressed with his thriller Red Eye and his decision to use Alexandre Aja on the wonderfully gorey remake of The Hills Have Eyes.

On the other, his name has been attached to some horible movies (Wishmaster, Cursed, etc).

Well, over all I am excited. If noting else, the world can always use more bad horror movies!

Shrek the 3rd - Teaser Poster

I have to admit that I am a real sucker for the Shrek franchise!
I thought the second one was just as good if not better than the first. It's good to see that some of my favorite characters (the gingerbread man and others) will be back!

Ronny Yu on Fearless and movie making

I caught Jet Lee's Fearless yesterday and I have to say, it was wonderful. A timeless story, great fight choreography (Yuen Wo-Ping of Matrix fame), and superb acting.

The director Ronny Yu is best known in the states for his horror movies (Jason vs Freddy and Bride of Chucky). He also made some strange and worth seeing horror/fantasy movies in Hong Kong, including the classic The Bride with White Hair.

In this comingsoon.net interview, Yu talks about movie making in Hollywood and Hong Kong and how he would love to do the Jason vs Freddy vs Ash that everyone keeps talking about.

The Grudge short films on Yahoo

Yahoo has a series of short films based on Takashi Shimizu's The Grudge 2 that hits theatres in a few weeks. The clips are hosted by Sam Rami, though he acts a little stiff.

Like almost all the remakes of Japanese horror movies, I liked the first version of The Grudge, JU-ON more. However, the remake was not without it few merits, Takashi Shimizu and Sarah Michelle Gellar among them.

-(SPOILER)-

I wasn't excited about the sequel until I saw that they were going to kill off Gellar's character and move the story further from there. This is a gutsy move that happens in Japanese horror franchises all the time, but Hollywood never sacrifices names for story.

David Goyer's Invisible trailer shows up online

David Goyer (Blade, Batman Begins) has a new movie coming out that isn't comic related (although it reminds me of Joe Straczynski's Midnight Naion). The trailer for The Invisible looks great. Lot's of suspence and some clever horror.

You Know Who tops villain list. Sauron gives him the evil eye!

The Big Bad Read lists the top 20 villains from literature. I'm not suprised that Voldemort topped the list, but I wanted to see Dracula a little higher up. And, where is Achillis from Orson Scott Card's Ender's Shadow and the sequels?

The Man in Black from King's Gunslinger series might be too adult for this list, but Heathcliff? I would have said Scrooge or Moriarty from Sherlock Holmes.

Anyone else have some villains that this list is missing?

Peter Jackson on making movies of Naomi Novik's TEMERAIRE series

Anna and I were just in a bookstore this weekend and I pointed out Naomi Novik's TEMERAIRE series as one I needed to read in the near future. Looks like I'm way behind the times.

Peter Jackson announced today that his production company has optioned the rights to the series. He discusses his ideas and TEMERAIRE as a series in this interesting Ain't It Cool News interview.

If we could only get a film maker like Jackson to notice the wonderful Robin Hobb.

The Thing that should not be?

Fangoria is reporting that Strike Entertainment (Dawn of the Dead remake, Slither) is planning to make a prequel to John Carpenter's 1982 sci fi/horror masterpiece, The Thing.

I have mixed feelings on this one. It's something that could be amazing or go horribly wrong. I really believe it will depend on how they handle the SFX as much as the story itself. They need to stick with the animatronics that made the first movie so discustingly scary and only add touches of CGI when needed.

Whatever happens, I'll be there with my parka and my flamethrower.

Did Hollywood learn nothing from Lucasfer's updated Star Wars? Now, Paramount is saying that,

In honor of the show's 40th anniversary, CBS Domestic Television is releasing all 79 episodes with new special effects and music on 200 stations, beginning Sept. 16. The first batch of episodes will be chosen from a list of fan favorites.

The original special effects will be replaced with computer-generated images, including the exterior of the Starship Enterprise, based on the exact measurements of the original model, now resting in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. The main title sequence will also be redone with new effects and a new digital stereo soundtrack re-recorded by an orchestra and a female singer. William Shatner's classic original recording of the 38-word "Space, the final frontier ..." monologue has been remastered and continues to open each episode.

All of the space scenes, alien landscapes and ships - including the Romulan Bird of Prey and Klingon Battle Cruisers. The remastered episodes have been converted from the original film into a high-definition format, which gives viewers a clearer, crisper, more vibrant picture, even when viewed in standard definition.

Oh, that's perfect, take away the only reason people still love the original series. The nostalgic "cheese factor." We all know that the storylines were, with a few exceptions, ridiculesis. We only love it because it is wonderfully bad and predictable.

Next they'll be changing the shirt colors of the men who die each episode so the audience wont know who the sacrificial "red shirts" are!
