Studios Release List of 2006 Movies via Scifi Wire

Scifi Wire has a small list of the sci-fi and horror movies being released next year. I was just wondering what the movies to look forward to (after Underworld: Evolution) would be. It sound like a nice list. Here are a few I am looking forward to:

Mel Gibson's APOCALYPTO

The trailer for Mel Gibson's new movie APOCALYPTO is up at Apple trailers and it looks awesome. I just finished Orson Scott Cards book, Pastwatch: The Redemption of Christopher Colombus and was thinking about how someone should make a movie about the Myan civilization. Well, my wish is Gibson's movie and I can't wait to see it.

On a wierd note, Gibson himself appears in the trailer. Watch it once through and then pause it and roll it back fram by frame until you get to the second time it shows the white myans. You'll see Gibson standing there with a crazy Saddam beard and a smoke hanging out of his mouth.

Horror Classics coming from Dark Horse Press

Dark Horse Comics new Press is publishing new novels based on classic Universal Monsters. I have loved the Universal Monsters since I was a kid and they are starting this series off right. In January Wolf Man: Hunter’s Moon followed by Dracula: Asylum in Febuary and in March they take on my favorite Universal Monster of all time, The Creature from the Black Lagoon in Time's Black Lagoon. These are definatly on my to read list for next year.

New Conan Movie Still in the Plans for Warner Brothers

Sci-fi Wire is reporting this morning that Warner Brothers that

production president Jeff Robinov told the Hollywood North Report Web site that a third Conan the Barbarian live-action movie is in the works and that the studio "is committed to producing the film within the next year."

Good News for Christmas!! I am been looking for a new Conan fix for a long time. The Dark Horse comic series and the reprints of the books and old Marvel comics are great, but a new movie will be awesome!!

Lequin Books to be Made into Anime

I keep seeing this everywhere:

Studio Ghibli annaounced that its next film will be an adaptation of Ursula K. Leguin's EARTHSEA novels, to be directed by Goro Miyazaki, son of famed visionary Hayao. It will be based on the 3rd and 4th books in the series, namely THE FARTHEST SHORE and TEHANU.

Unlike the Sci-Fi Channel mini-series that was based on the first two. I have never read the books and I was less than impressed with the Leguin panned Sc-fi channel version. But the poster is gorgeous and looks very promising!

Warner Brothers Releases Synopsis of Lady in the Water

I love M. Night Shyamalan! I have liked everyone of his movies. I was bothered by the ending of The Village (Anna and I had it guessed well before we saw it), but I still loved the tension and most of all the creature effects. They were the coolest looking creatures to be in a film in a long time and they were (spoiler) fake.

Now, he has Lady in the Water coming out in June, 2006 and the preview plays like an art piece until the name M. Night Shyamalan comes up at the end and it all clicks into place.

Scfi Wire has a synopsis:

Shyamalan originally conceived of the modern-day fairy tale for his children. It stars Paul Giamatti as Cleveland Heep, who has been "quietly trying to disappear among the burned-out lightbulbs and broken appliances of the Cove apartment complex," according to the studio's official description. "But on the night that irrevocably changes his life, Cleveland finds someone else hiding in the mundane routine of the modest building: a mysterious young woman named Story [The Village's Bryce Dallas Howard], who has been living in the passageways beneath the building's swimming pool."

Heep discovers that Story is actually a "narf": a nymph-like character from an epic bedtime story who is being stalked by vicious creatures determined to prevent her from making the treacherous journey from our world back to hers. "Story's unique powers of perception reveal the fates of Cleveland's fellow tenants, whose destinies are tied directly to her own, and they must work together to decipher a series of codes that will unlock the pathway to her freedom," the description said. "But the window of opportunity for Story to return home is closing rapidly, and the tenants are putting their own lives at great risk to help her. Cleveland will have to face the demons that have followed him to the Cove—and the other tenants must seize the special powers that Story has brought out in them—if they hope to succeed in their daring and dangerous quest to save her world ... and ours."

Sounds great and very Shyamalan. Now, I am getting excited!

Old China Miéville's Picks a top 10 weird fiction List

"I don't think you can distinguish science fiction, fantasy and horror with any rigour, as the writers around the magazine Weird Tales early in the last century (Lovecraft in particular) illustrated most sharply. So I use the term 'weird fiction' for all fantastic literature - fantasy, SF, horror and all the stuff that won't fit neatly into slots.

This list is a few years old, but Miéville is a great sci-fi writer from England - I love his work, The Scar. His list is interesting and I have only read Wells' The Island of Dr Moreau and Brontë's Jane Eyre (which is a very interesting choice.)

I really want to read some Philip K Dick and might just start with The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch now that Miéville is the second person to place it in front of my eyes.

Battle Angel - Cameron's adaptation moves forward

Sci-fi Wire reports that James Cameron is moving ahead with his adaption of Battle Angel Alita.

I am a big fan of the manga and a movie would be great, but worry about the Polar Express style graphics that they are going to use. I think a live action version could be done and done well.

Flux Fails to Topple Potter

I failed to make it out to the theatre this weekend. A little thing called "the last few weeks of Fall semester," but I wasn't suprised to see Aeon Flux, a brilliant and strange cartoon that is a hard sale as a blockbuster sci-fi movie, in the number 2 spot under Harry Potter's 3rd weekend out.
I still want to see it, but it will praobably have to wait till DVD or a lonely Christmas break night at the cheap theatre.

Campbell Speaks on "Bubba Nosfertatu"

Bruce Campbell (star of great films and the not-so-great Man with the Screaming Brain I reviewed earlier) has told Mars Dust that a prequel to his amazing Bubba Ho-tep,

"It's gonna happen, but the nickel has to drop. There are a few companies interested, but administrative shakeups tend to slow business down."
